Tour of EJ Production: How Vocational Students Learn Through Hands-On Experience

At a time when the importance of hands-on learning is increasingly recognised, every school that allows its students to experience a real working environment is taking a significant step forward.

Upravo takav primer dolazi iz saradnje kompanije Enterijer Janković i srednje tehničke stručne škole „Drvo-Art“ iz Beograda, gde su učenici treće godine smera tehničar za oblikovanje nameštaja i enterijera po prvi put imali priliku da vide savremene proizvodne procese u praksi, i steknu praktično znanje izvan okvira školske radionice.

This tour was more than just an additional activity - it has become a key moment in helping students understand their future profession. What had previously existed only as theory, sketches, or tutor demonstrations took on real form, sound, texture, and pace within the live production environment at Enterijer Janković.

First Encounter with Real Production

Unlike working in school conditions, where processes are carried out on a limited number of machines, students at Enterijer Janković were able to experience full-scale production. Instead of isolated tasks, they were introduced to an entire system - from raw materials to finished products.

What makes this visit particularly valuable is the fact that production at Enterijer Janković is not mass-produced or standardised. Each project is unique, whether it involves furnishing hotels, public spaces, or private residences. This variety adds significant value to the experience, helping students understand how their skills must adapt to different client and market requirements. The vision led by Božo Janković, the company’s founder, is clearly reflected in this approach:

Obilazak koji povezuje teorijsko i praktično znanje

The visit was carefully structured to give students a complete understanding of how the business operates. The programme began with introductory presentations, where company representatives explained the organisation of work, key processes, and how a project develops from concept to completion.

At this stage, students quickly realised how important preparation is before manufacturing begins. They were introduced to technical drawings, project documentation, and the way production workflows are managed. This part was especially relevant to their course, as it directly reflects what they study in school.

Following the theoretical introduction came the part everyone was most looking forward to - the production tour.

Where It All Begins: Material Preparation and Processing

In the cutting department, students observed how panel materials are prepared and processed for further stages of production. They were particularly interested in how raw materials are transformed through precise cutting and machining.

They were then introduced to veneer processing, where they saw how thin layers of wood are combined into larger surfaces and prepared for further use. This process often remains quite abstract in the classroom, but in a real production setting, it becomes much clearer and more tangible.

Working with solid wood further demonstrated the level of precision required, from cutting and shaping to assembling and finishing individual elements.

Technology in the Service of Precision: CNC and Machine Processing

Jedan od segmenata koji je izazvao posebno interesovanje jeste rad CNC mašine. U ovom delu proizvodnje učenici su mogli da vide kako savremena tehnologija industrije 4.0 omogućava izuzetnu preciznost u obradi drveta.

For Drvo-Art students, this was a direct encounter with tools and systems they learn about in their studies. They observed how software is applied in practice, how complex forms are produced, and how components are checked before moving on to the next stage.

Their curiosity was evident through the many questions they asked our specialists—from CNC programming and material selection to the way different elements are assembled into a functional whole. The machine workshop also highlighted the importance of quality control, as students saw how components are temporarily assembled to ensure accuracy. This step clearly demonstrates how essential precision is at every stage of production.

Finishing: Where the Final Product Gains Its Character

After machining, students visited the finishing department, where they learned about the stage that defines the final appearance of a product. They observed how finishes are prepared, how different effects are achieved, and how many details influence the final result.

The combination of craftsmanship and automation was particularly noticeable, as students saw modern coating systems in use. This is where each product gains its identity—from the choice of colour to the level of finish. For many students, this was an entirely new experience, as such complex finishing processes are rarely accessible in school environments.

Final Steps: Assembly and Packaging

Once all components were processed and finished, the next stage was assembly. Here, students saw how individual parts are brought together into a complete product and prepared for delivery.

This stage ties the entire process together and helps students understand how each previous step impacts the outcome. It clearly shows how interconnected all departments within Enterijer Janković’s production are.

EJ Showroom - Where Ideas and Inspiration Come to Life

After the production tour, students visited the EJ Showroom in the company’s main building, where they were able to see completed products in their final form. For many, this was the most impressive part of the visit, as they could directly connect everything they had seen with the finished result.

From that point onward, production was no longer a series of separate steps, but a clear and logical process leading to tangible, high-quality outcomes.

More Than a Tour: Investing in Future Professionals

Through visits like this, the company not only opens the doors of its production but also actively contributes to shaping future professionals. This approach, strongly supported by Božo Janković, helps strengthen the industry and create new opportunities for young people.

The experience of Drvo-Art students shows just how motivating this kind of collaboration can be for those entering the interior design and furniture industry. For Enterijer Janković, it is also an opportunity to connect with new generations, present its way of working, and inspire students to see their future within the company.
